Building a Piano-Style Coat Rack
I saw a piano-style coat rack and wanted to build my own version. The idea is simple: a row of “keys” in alternating walnut and maple, where the sharps and flats pivot down to become hooks.
The plan
- Walnut for the dark keys, maple for the naturals.
- A French cleat on the back for mounting.
- Brass pins as the pivot points.
First decisions
The biggest open question is the pivot mechanism. Brass rod through the full width keeps everything aligned, but individual pins make repairs easier. I’m leaning toward a single rod.
More to come once the lumber is milled.
